My D.I.Y. Dress

Dress – d.i.y. project | Belt – Chinese Laundry | Shoes – Qupid!

Why did it take me like 12 hours (give or take because I was multi-tasking) to make a 4 hour dress! Back in the day me and my sister use to knock-out simple patterns in less then 2 hours. We’ve start early in the morning and be wearing our outfits by noon. I just ain’t got it no more. This simple shift dress pattern just seem to drag on and on. Seam ripper in hand I had to take out a few stitches to correct sloppiness because of my poor eyesight.  I love the idea of choosing my own fabric and making something unique to me, but I sure don’t like the labor behind it!

I was thrilled to find this beautiful fabric for only $3.49 a yard. The McCall pattern cost $0.99 on sale at Hancock Fabrics last week. So total with about 2 1/2 yards of fabric (because of the repeat patten on the bottom)  and the price of the pattern, total for this project was $11 bucks give or take with tax. I have two more patterns and 3 pieces of fabric left to make three more dresses. After that it will be a wrap for the year. I have a very basic, old sewing machine because I really didn’t see the need to upgrade since I don’t really sew like that anymore. I also inherited my mother’s serger that you need a flight manual just to figure out how to thread. Never used it. Sewing is so time consuming, I’d rather just make small modifications to an existing garment.  I was messing around with this dress seems like all day yesterday.  Didn’t get anything else done! :-|

This is my Next Dress Pattern, will I accomplish this or just go to the mall?

@ Niki – I think you should! I would definitely be worth the investment. I’m sure (or hope) they have classes at your local community college under a “Fashion and Design” curriculum I would guess. Get a good sewing machine that does like EVERYTHING, so you won’t get frustrated or waste time. My eyesight is not what it use to me and I just feel like I’m slower then I use to be about doing things, so I’m reluctant to upgrade on my sewing machine.

    It did turn out wonderfully.
I agree with you about the time factor, though.
I’m only good for adjustments on my sewing machine.
Once I made a skirt from scratch and that was the first and last item.

This dress is beautiful. I don’t know how to sew at all (not even a button)…pretty bad I know. Your dress turned out beautifully, and I love the pattern. You are very talented.

My mother’s taken up sewing again and I’ve been helping her, so I want to really take a good class this coming Fall semester. Especially to make more dresses.

I really need to get into the pattern thing because that dress is fabulous. Don’t know why, but im scared to use patterns.

@ Avid Accents – you probably want to start off with a simple 3 or 4 piece pattern. Go in slow! LOL

Your dress is beautiful. Sewing is time consuming, especially if you haven’t done it in a while.

  15. Sing says:

The colors, pattern and cut of the dress, so very cute. Can easily be worn in the fall. If you ever sold that dress, I’d be all over it. Sooo gorg.
My mom, grandma and most of my aunts sew and I tried to learn but my brain just would not settle down long enough to learn. It’s a long process that I just didn’t have the patience for. But I admire you for still creating despite the time it takes.

This is gorgeous. I so want to buy a sewing machine when I move to Atlanta. I’ll be working from home so I’ll have more time for fun projects like this. Not that I’ve ever sewn anything before…Lol! anyway, I just love the colors and pop of white with the clutch! fabulous!

  26. Johanna C says:

OMGSH, LOVE it! You are very talented!!!

  27. Tonia says:

You sound like me. I used to sew ALL THE TIME when I was younger and in college. It came in handy when I needed clothes. I have been meaning to take up sewing again for simple skirts and dresses. The only difference now is I am 20 yrs older with a job and kids and not so much time. I get the patterns and fabric and do nothing. Your dress has given me the push to at least do one garment to see what I think. Your dress is pretty and not only that its one of a kind!

  28. chomy says:

this is not even DIY. this is DESIGN! lol…the prints are beautiful and you did a fabulous job with your tailoring….i still can’t cut/use patterns to save my life, should have probably listened a bit more when my aunts tried to teach me when i was a little …moreover any learned sewing skills have all but diminished so i just eyeball and drape and ‘hope’ that things work out in the end??!! lol You did a brilliant job with this … simply fabulous!!

  29. Champagne*Diva says:
